IT/OT convergence
Historically, the IT department is responsible for the informational infrastructure of an enterprise, while the OT department is responsible for the equipment on industrial sites. They function independently within an organization.
Nowadays, the world is changing. When the manufactures transform to the digital, there are more IT/OT interactions needed, that making the IT/OT shift to convergence. That results in enhanced efficiency, minimized operational costs, higher competitive advantage and reduced or eliminated errors.
Recent surveys show that IT/OT Convergence attracts top attention among other technology trends. Industries most excited are Energy/utilities, Healthcare, Manufacturing, and Technology.
However, there are differences between IT and OT that we should plan for the convergence. For example, OT network usually runs protocols that are not commonly used in traditional IT networks.
At IoTlab, we make sure no incompatibility in a IT/OT converged design before actual deployment.
